Tesla has finalized its AI5 chip design, with CEO Elon Musk confirming the chip has reached the tape-out stage. While this marks a significant milestone, Musk clarified that AI5 will not be used for vehicle self-driving capabilities. Instead, the new chip will focus on Tesla's Optimus robot and supercomputer cluster projects.

According to Musk, the existing AI4 hardware already delivers safety performance that exceeds human drivers for Full Self-Driving functionality. This allows Tesla to avoid costly retrofits across its existing fleet while directing next-generation compute toward higher-value applications in robotics and AI training.

The AI5 chip represents continued progress in Tesla's custom silicon development, though its timeline has slipped significantly from initial promises. Mass production is not expected until mid-2027, meaning the upcoming Cybercab will launch using current-generation AI4 hardware.

This strategic shift highlights Tesla's pragmatic approach to balancing technological advancement with practical deployment, leveraging existing capabilities while investing in future applications.
